Ahmed Al-Niaimi, MD, FACOG, FACS
Associate Professor (CHS)
Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Al-Niaimi is currently the head of surgical quality outcome for the department of OBGYN and the chair of the Quality Improvement and Review (QIRC) committee. His passion is implementing innovative surgical techniques to improve and promote achieving optimal surgical debulking of ovarian cancer, specifically in the upper abdomen. His other passion is to push the learning curve on minimally invasive surgery and promote the use of single port laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Al-Niaimi's approach to cancer treatment is simple: patients come first. This means optimizing surgical outcomes as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy to achieve the best cancer care for patients so they can live life to the fullest. Dr. Al-Niaimi’s academic activity, other than his busy surgical practice, is the head of the quality surgical outcome for the division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Wisconsin. He is also the creator and manager of divisional GOLD-CUP (the Gynecologic Oncology Longitudinal Data Collection and Utilization Project), as well as the OLIVIA (Obstetrics, Labor and Infant Visualization of Informatic Application). Both are computer programs that track clinical outcome metrics and logistical data collection. Dr. Al-Niaimi's research interests include optimization of health outcomes, such as post-operative complications and the effect of patient medical comorbidities and surgical techniques on surgical and oncologic outcomes. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and has been active in presenting research at national conferences. He is also involved in many national courses as an instructor of surgical techniques for gynecologic oncologists. Dr. Al-Niaimi is Founder and President of the nonprofit organization, ICAN. https://www.iraqicancernetwork.org caring to improve cancer care in Iraq.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Al-Niaimi on this well-deserved honor!
Congratulations to UW Ob-Gyn resident Connor Wang, MD, PGY-3, who is lead author on a new publication in Gynecologic Oncology Reports!
In the article “When we open and close: postoperative outcomes after aborted primary cytoreduction for ovarian cancer”, Wang and co-authors Matt Wagar, MD, PGY-4, Amy Godecker, PhD, Ahmed Al-Niaimi, MD, and David Kushner, MD aimed to expand available data to help counsel patients about outcomes after aborted primary debulking surgery.
This retrospective study looked at postsurgical morbidity for 43 patients who underwent aborted primary debulking surgery for advanced ovarian cancer:
“All patients subsequently underwent ICS, [interval cytoreductive surgery] with 21 (48.8%) achieving no residual macroscopic disease and 21 (48.8%) to ≤1cm of macroscopic disease. After AD [aborted primary debulking], 16 (37.2%) experienced at least one G≥3 event within the first 30 days. The most common complication was gastrointestinal complications. Preoperative albumin was the only significant predictor for G≥3 complication after AD.”

““For cases like Emily’s, it was imperative to begin comprehensive treatment, including surgery, as soon as possible regardless of the circumstances happening around us,” said Dr. Al-Niaimi. “But those early days were surreal. Things were changing by the day as we worked hard to keep all our patients safe from a virus we still knew very little about.”"

Ahmed Al-Niaimi, MD, of the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Gynecologic Oncology, published “Guidelines for Perioperative Care in Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) with or without hyperthermic IntraPEritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC): Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS®) Society Recommendations — Part I: Preoperative and intraoperative management” in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology.
In the article, Al-Niaimi and co-authors reviewed available evidence in current perioperative care guidelines:
“Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways have been shown to considerably reduce complications, length of stay and costs after most of surgical procedures by standardised application of best evidence-based perioperative care. The aim was to elaborate dedicated recommendations for cytoreductive surgery (CRS) ± hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in a two-part series of guidelines based on expert consensus. The present part I of the guidelines highlights preoperative and intraoperative management.”
