Heidi Brown, MD, of the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, published results from the randomized controlled trial of Mind Over Matter: Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder in Obstetrics and Gynecology!
“Small-Group, Community-Member Intervention for Urinary and Bowel Incontinence” evaluated the effects of Brown’s community-based incontinence education program, Mind Over Matter, on bladder and bowel incontinence symptoms for older women.
According to the study, of trial participants who were randomized into the Mind Over Matter courses, 70 percent reported improved bladder symptoms and 55 percent reported improved bowel symptoms four months after starting the program. By comparison, among the control group who did not attend the workshops, 20 percent of women reported worsening bladder and bowel symptoms in the same period.
