In her lecture, Wendland described the idea of "briefcase concepts" - clinical practices that travel to different locations, even if the context in which they were developed does not apply to the new location. Using case studies from her own experience practicing in less resourced areas, she asked the following questions:
- What clinical effects do "briefcase concepts" have as they travel to places where their baseline assumptions do not hold true?
- What are their social effects on midwives and doctors?
- Are there ways to maximize these concepts' benefits and minimize their harms?
