Beninati and Fetal Surgery Team on cover of Journal of Interventional Radiology

Michael Beninati, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the UW Health Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center team, including Eric J. Monroe, Teresa Chapman, and Inna Lobeck, published a new study in the Journal of Interventional Radiology, and are featured on the cover of the November 2024 issue!
In “Percutaneous Puncture of a Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion Balloon,” Beninati and co-authors studied the impact of fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO), which can help increase lung volume and development for a fetus with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia by placing a detachable balloon in the trachea. The team performed FETO at 30 weeks and one day gestation, and then at 35 weeks they broke the balloon after observing increased lung volume.
In the end, “the infant underwent successful diaphragmatic hernia repair 2 days after birth and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was not required for support during the hospital course.”
