Betancourt Ponce graduates from Barroilhet Lab
Congratulations to Mayra Betancourt Ponce, PhD, first-ever PhD graduate from the Barroilhet Lab in the UW Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology! She graduated in May 2025 with the thesis project “Oxidative Phosphorylation Inhibition in Solid Tumors.” After finishing her PhD, Betancourt Ponce will complete her final year of medical school at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, with the goal of graduating in May 2026. She plans to apply for dermatology residency.
Betancourt Ponce shared some reflections on her time in the Barroilhet Lab and the Department of Ob-Gyn:
Why were you interested in the research happening in the Barroilhet Lab?
I was really interested in the research projects in the lab, which explore the intersection between cancer biology, immunology, and metabolism. I was also excited by the opportunity to develop a translational research project with implications for ovarian cancer treatment.
What lessons will you carry forward from your work in the Barroilhet Lab?
I grew so much in the Barroilhet Lab, both professionally and personally. From learning different lab techniques and engaging in scientific communication to developing leadership and communication skills, I know these experiences will stay with me throughout my career.
Any shout-outs or thanks to faculty, staff, other members of the research lab who shaped your experience?
I want to sincerely thank Lisa, Manish, and María for their guidance and constant support. I learned so much from each of them and feel lucky to have their mentorship. I'm also grateful to all past and current lab members - it was a wonderful group to learn and grow with. I already miss the lab!
Congratulations, Dr. Betancourt Ponce!
