Codispoti co-authors study on resources for the transition to residency in Journal of Graduate Medical Education

UW Department of Ob-Gyn resident Nicolette Codispoti, MD, MS, MPH, PGY-4, co-authored a new study published in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education examining how first-year ob-gyn residents use and experience resources designed to help them transition from medical school to residency. Codispoti co-authored the article with colleagues from ob-gyn programs in academic medical centers across the country.

In “Supporting the Transition: New Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident Perspectives on Resources for Residency Preparation,” the authors explore the challenges PGY-1 residents face as they adjust to new responsibilities, learning expectations, and clinical environments. Through interviews with 11 first-year ob-gyn residents, the study identified three major themes: residents need flexibility to navigate their individual learning needs (autonomy), responsibility for patient care motivates them to build clinical skills (competence), and supportive teams help residents feel a sense of familiarity (belonging). 

“Tailoring support strategies to align with learning goals may enhance the effectiveness of transition resources and promote early resident growth and well-being.”
