CORE researchers publish study in Journal of Sex Research

Researchers in UW Collaborative for Reproductive Equity (CORE) co-authored a new article published in The Journal of Sex Research. Co-authors include Madison Lands, MPH, MSW; Lindsay Cannon, MPH, MSW; Jenny Higgins, PhD, MPH; and Laura Swan, PhD, LCSW.

In “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer+ Patients’ Preferences for Contraceptive Counseling and Experiences of Coercion in Contraceptive Care”, the authors seek to understand the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer+ (LGBQ+) patients with provider-based contraceptive coercion as well as their preferences for contraceptive counseling. Using the answers of a large and diverse national sample to a quantitative and qualitative survey, the research team found:

“... LGBQ+ participants reported upward contraceptive coercion significantly more frequently than their heterosexual counterparts. LGBQ+ participants also reported different preferences for contraceptive care than heterosexual participants, both in how frequently they would like to discuss contraception with their provider and in how frequently they felt their providers had discussed contraception with them. As demonstrated in the open-ended responses, LGBQ+ participants often attributed these misalignments to heteronormative assumptions or cultural incompetence.”
