Cutler shares thoughts on abortion legislation with Cap Times

Abigail Cutler, MD, MPH, assistant professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, spoke with the Cap Times about legislative proposals with the potential to impact reproductive healthcare in Wisconsin.

The article “Madison doctor says abortion control proposals are meant to scare” shares overviews of a few different items of legislation that aim to regulate, restrict, and define reproductive healthcare. Cutler discussed the impacts these laws can have on patients and providers:

“We know from evidence across the country that creating abortion ban exceptions does not make pregnancy or health care safer. Generally speaking, these, like medical emergency clauses don't offer adequate protection for the many different kinds of pregnancy complications that people experience,” Cutler said. “They end up being confusing for providers, they cause kind of like an uncertain chilling effect, particularly when they are linked to threats of criminalization and loss of licensure and other things.”
