Cutler talks about post-Dobbs training options with Chicago Health Magazine

Abigail Cutler, MD, MPH, assistant professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology, spoke with Chicago Health Magazine for a recent story about the impact abortion bans have on medical training.
In “Crossing Lines: How abortion bans are reshaping medical training and practice,” Cutler mentioned how the UW Department of Ob-Gyn residency program saw an 8% decrease in applications between 2022 to 2023, and a 15% decrease from 2023 to 2024. She also talked about how the department shifted to training residents out of state in order to make sure they graduated in compliance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards.
“Our residents rightly worried about how they were going to acquire the requisite clinical skills to provide comprehensive abortion, miscarriage, and other obstetrical care. They also expressed distress over the fact they were learning to care for patients not based on evidence-based medicine and guidelines but rather based on concerns about what kind of healthcare was legal,” said Cutler.
