Domeyer-Klenske talks about postpartum health needs with Spectrum News
Amy Domeyer-Klenske, MD, associate professor and director of the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, spoke with Spectrum News about postpartum health. In “In Focus: OB/GYN shares some of the health needs many new moms have,” Domeyer-Klenske spoke about Medicaid coverage for postpartum care, how long recovery may take after birth, and how insurance coverage of preventative measures can help detect issues early on.
When asked whether insurance coverage can help detect possible issues early on, Domeyer-Klenske said:
“If people are able to get in when their healthcare providers, their OB-GYNs, their midwives, then we are able to do things like screening, like let’s look at a mood disorder screening, let’s see how you’re doing, let’s check in on this. And when you’re not doing well, let’s schedule additional follow up visits. You know, in the past, it was ‘Well hey, you can come in and maybe we identify postpartum depression at two weeks or six weeks,’ but that treatment needs to continue, those check-ups need to continue beyond six weeks. And so, even if it was picked up, it was challenging for folks to continue that care, so I’m so happy that, if they’re able to access care, folks will hopefully have more opportunities for preventative screenings. For the folks who have diagnoses made, even in those first six weeks, they’ll be able to continue the care they need to stay healthy, for themselves and their families.”
