Graduation Spotlight: Powell graduates from Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship
Jacqueline Powell, MD, is the 2026 graduate from the UW Department of Ob-Gyn Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Powell shared reflections on her time in fellowship, what’s next in her career, and how the program prepared her for a successful future. Congratulations, Dr. Powell!
What’s next after fellowship?
Joining the University of Wisconsin Department of Ob-Gyn Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty.
What are the most important things you learned during your fellowship?
This is hard to answer because there are so many! I think that the ability to have complex conversations surrounding challenging diagnoses is a skill that I have continued to develop during fellowship. In the world of MFM we often have to share unexpected diagnoses with patients, and fellowship has allowed me to understand complex physiology and evidenced-based clinical management and has also given me the opportunity to develop these counseling skills and to meet patients where they are in their pregnancy journey.
How do you feel UW Ob-Gyn prepared you for success after fellowship?
This program has prepared me so well for next steps after fellowship. I am lucky enough to be able to stay at UW for a faculty position, and my training has really set me up to be a well-rounded MFM. Our fellowship offers the depth of training in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, with a unique ultrasound education curriculum that prepares us for practice in any setting upon graduation. As a major referral center for Wisconsin and our neighboring states, we have the honor of caring for many patients with complex maternal and fetal conditions which adds to the depth of our training.
What will you miss most about UW Ob-Gyn and/or Madison?
Fortunately, I am not leaving! I am so grateful to be able to stay in this amazing department and Madison. A few things I love to do in Madison are exploring the bike trails, eating pastries from Batch Bakery, and spending time by the lakes in the summer.
Any special shout-outs or thanks to faculty, staff, other trainees who really shaped your time here?
I would like to thank Dr. Rhoades for bringing me back to Madison three years ago and being pivotal in allowing me to stay on as faculty! All of the MFM faculty have been instrumental in my learning, in addition to the ASOG attendings during our time on L&D. Of course, I am so appreciative of the residents who work tireless to care for our antepartum patients and patients on labor and delivery. Your work does not go unnoticed! I also can't forget Dylan Kittell who is an incredible program coordinator and we are so lucky to have his support! Last but definitely not least, thank you to my co-fellows past and present (Erin, Scott, Katy and Samantha) for making fellowship so special.
