Grand Rounds: Phelps presents Weight Loss or Wellness? The Shifting Online Landscape of Weight Stigma and Diet Culture in the “Age of Ozempic”

On February 27, 2025, Katherine Phelps, PhD, teaching faculty in the UW-Madison Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, presented the Grand Rounds lecture “Weight Loss or Wellness? The Shifting Online Landscape of Weight Stigma and Diet Culture in the “Age of Ozempic”.”
In the lecture, Phelps described the evolution of weight stigma and diet culture prior to the rise of social media, identified key recent moments that impacted the current culture of weight stigma, analyzed social media weight loss directives and advertisements and how certain viewers are disproportionately affected, and how resources can be utilized in a clinical setting to decrease weight stigma.
