Hoppe co-authors secondary analysis from CHAP trial in Green Journal

Kara Hoppe, DO, PhD, professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, recently co-authored a secondary analysis of the Chronic Hypertension and Pregnancy (CHAP) trial in Obstetrics & Gynecology

In “Relationship Between Third-Trimester Low Maternal Blood Pressure and Small-for-Pressure and Small-for-Gestational-Age Birth weight in Pregnant Individuals With Mild Chronic Hypertension”, Hoppe and co-authors aimed to estimate the association between third-trimester maternal low blood pressure and delivery of a neonate with small-for-gestational age (SGA) birth weight in patients treated for mild chronic hypertension. The authors found that:

“... maternal hypotension (defined as systolic BP below 110 mm Hg and diastolic BP below 70 mm Hg or mean arterial pressure below 80 mm Hg) occurs infrequently in parturient patients treated for mild chronic hypertension and that among those with low BP in the early third trimester, there does not appear to be an increased risk for SGA birth weight. These data can be used to reassure patients and clinicians that treatment of mild chronic hypertension to a goal BP of below 140/90 prevents perinatal complications and appears to be safe for the fetus.”
