Jacques discusses vulvar health with Inverse

Laura Jacques, MD, associate professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, spoke with Inverse for a recent story about the vulvar health benefits of wearing underwear.

In “Is Going Commando Healthier Than Wearing Underwear,” Jacques explained how the vulva and vagina are both self-regulating in terms of protection and thus, do best without added help from soaps, fragrances, and some fabrics.

“Detergents can have a lot of particulate left on the clothes and with the underwear being right against the vulvar skin, that can lead to allergic reaction or irritation,” Jacques said.

She also recommended a good time for people to go commando:

“When people can sleep without underwear, that can be really helpful because they can alleviate some of that friction-related damage or moisture-related damage.”
