Zhang, Jacques publish article in Wisconsin Medical Journal

Laura Jacques, MD, associate professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, and Ran Catherine Zhang, MD, MPH, assistant professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, co-authored a new article published in Wisconsin Medical Journal. Co-authors include Madelyn Frey, MPH; Laurie Lapp, MD, MPH; and Lena Swander, MPH.

In “Persistent Racial, Ethnic, and County-Level Disparities in Invasive Cervical Cancer Incidence in Wisconsin, 1998–2022,” Jacques, Zhang and co-authors looked at trends in cervical cancer incidence in Wisconsin by race, ethnicity and county. The authors found that while overall cervical cancer incidence declined 28% between 1998 and 2022, the declines were not seen uniformly across groups. Non-Hispanic Black individuals had nearly twice the incidence of non-Hispanic white individuals throughout the study period. Milwaukee County had the highest incidence and slowest decline among Wisconsin’s three most populous counties.

“If Wisconsin’s persistent racial and ethnic disparities are not addressed, these advances may widen, rather than narrow, existing gaps in cervical cancer burden.”
