McDonald discusses nitrous oxide for in-office ob-gyn procedures with Medscape Medical News

Ryan McDonald, MD, clinical professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, spoke with Medscape for a recent story about the use of nitrous oxide during in-office gynecologic procedures. The story recapped research presented at the 2026 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Annual Meeting about alternative analgesic options in ob-gyn procedures.

In “Offering Nitrous Oxide for In-Office Ob/Gyn Procedures Linked to Fewer OR-Based Procedures,” McDonald discussed the use of nitrous oxide for managing pain during in-office gynecologic procedures and how it may help reduce the need for operating room (OR) procedures:

“This was a really fantastic talk looking at using a style of analgesia that we’ve had for a long time in a new way because we’re increasingly doing in-office procedures, and everybody is committed to reducing pain for our patients.”
