Patel shares reflections on Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery fellowship

After three years of training in the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery fellowship, Ushma Patel, MD, is preparing to graduate. Patel shares what’s next after fellowship, the important lessons learned during training, and messages of gratitude for people who shaped her time at UW.
Where will you be going and what will you be doing after UW Ob-Gyn?
I'm heading to Milwaukee to join Froedtert-Medical College of Wisconsin where I'll primarily be doing Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery!
What are the most important things you learned during your fellowship?
Honestly, so much! The top few are: listening to patients and learning how to take care of even the most complex patients; feeling more confident surgically - especially for more complicated cases; learning how to be a good consultant and supporting colleagues; thinking critically and delivering evidence-based care; and building resilience!
How do you feel UW Ob-Gyn prepared you for success after fellowship?
In addition to the things I mentioned above, I got a ton of hands-on experience paired with increasing independence, which is key for success after fellowship. Plus, after my training here, I feel more confident about continuing research and teaching in my own academic career.
What will you miss most about UW Ob-Gyn and/or Madison?
I will miss the people!
Any special shout-outs or thanks to faculty, staff, other trainees who really shaped your time here?
One big shout out to my co-fellows, the residents, all of the staff who make up the UW Ob-Gyn department, and of course, the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery! The support I've gotten over the last seven years will stick with me forever!
