Sampene talks about new ACS cervical cancer screening guidelines with Beckers Oncology

Katherine Sampene, MD, clinical professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, was recently featured in an article by Beckers Oncology highlighting the American Cancer Society’s new cervical cancer screening guidelines. The update includes recommendations for self-collection and provides clearer guidance on when to discontinue screening safely.

When asked whether these changes would impact UW Health’s cervical cancer screening strategy, Sampene emphasized that self-collection of primary HPV screening, in addition to the availability of clinician-collected primary HPV screening, will be an important strategy to reach unscreened or under-screened populations:

“Both clinic-located self-collection and home self-collection are now FDA-approved, a revolutionary change that expands options for individuals to engage in cervical cancer screening in ways that align with their needs and preferences. The additional clarity on guidance regarding existing cervical cancer screening will help clinicians and patients understand when it is safe to discontinue screening, and equally as importantly, which individuals over age 65 will continue to warrant screening.”
