Stanic, Cooney research groups publish in Reproduction

The Stanic-Cooney research teams recently published a new article in Reproduction, led by co-first authors Andrea Wegrzynowicz, PhD (postdoctoral fellow with Drs. Stanic & Cooney) and Christina Dudley, MD (UW Ob-Gyn resident, who recently matched for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) fellowship at Cedar-Sinai program in LA), with senior mentorship from Laura Cooney, MD, associate professor in the Division of REI and Aleksandar Stanic, MD, PhD, professor in the Divisions of REI and Reproductive Sciences.

This invited review synthesizes the evidence linking PCOS to adverse maternal outcomes and maps plausible biological pathways across immunity, endocrinology, and placental biology.

In “Maternal complications of pregnancy in polycystic ovary syndrome”, the authors discuss the leading theories for this connection, including placental dysregulation, insulin resistance, excess androgens, and a preexisting pro-inflammatory state in PCOS. Clinical takeaways include:

“... emphasis on preconception optimization, early pregnancy screening for hypertensive and glycemic disorders, and postpartum cardiometabolic follow-up. We also call for prospective, mechanistic studies to disentangle inflammation-, androgen-, and insulin-driven pathways.”
