Welcome John Soehl, MD, to the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine

John Soehl, MD, has accepted an offer to join the UW Department of Ob-Gyn as an assistant professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine starting October 2025, once he has completed his maternal-fetal medicine fellowship.
Soehl (formerly Dr. Poehlmann) received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, after which he earned his MD at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency in our department, graduating in 2022. He left Wisconsin for maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island.
Soehl’s research interests include the impacts of diabetes in pregnancy and pain management during delivery. While at UW, he worked with Tiffany Green, PhD, of the Division of Reproductive and Population Health, in analyzing racial disparities in pain experiences for patients undergoing C-sections. He also worked with former faculty Kathleen Antony, MD, MS, in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine to study understand the impact of anxiety on pain and opioid use after C-section births. During his time in residency here, Soehl earned the Phillip R. Hamilton III, MD Award for Best Effort for Resident Research in 2022, the SMFM Residency Program Award for Excellence in Obstetrics in 2020, and served as the administrative chief resident in 2021-22.
Dr. Soehl will be an excellent addition to our faculty, so please help us welcome him back to UW-Madison!
