Welcome Melissa Neal, PhD, MPH, to Hoppe Research Group

The Hoppe Research Group recently welcomed postdoctoral scholar Melissa Neal, PhD, MPH. Neal is a T32 Primary Care Research Fellow whose appointment began on July 1, 2025. Learn more about Dr. Neal’s past experience and what she will focus on in her new role!
What are your primary responsibilities in this role?
In my postdoctoral role, my key responsibilities are to gain more training and skills that will advance my career in research. Dr. Hoppe will be my primary research mentor. I will work with Dr. Hoppe and her team to support her research initiatives to improve pregnancy outcomes and enhance skills in health systems and community engaged research and implementation science methods.
Professional background and experience:
In May 2025 I earned my PhD in Public and Community Health from the Medical College of Wisconsin and Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Using mixed-methods approaches, my dissertation focused on the impact of racism, stress, and resilience on adverse pregnancy outcomes among African American women in Milwaukee, WI. My dissertation received national and local recognition, including the American Heart Association’s Research Supplement to Promote Diversity and MCW’s Outstanding Contribution to Public Health Dissertation Award.
Why you were interested in joining Dr. Hoppe’s research group?
I am excited to join Dr. Hoppe's research group to collaborate with others who share a passion for improving pregnancy outcomes, gain hands on experience and contribute to meaningful work that will drive equitable healthcare and health outcomes.

I enjoy exercising and nature.
