Cutler, Higgins talk about post-Dobbs research in Cap Times

Abigail Cutler, MD, MPH, assistant professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, was the lead author on a study published in JAMA Open Network about the impact of the Dobbs decision on the ability of ob-gyns in Wisconsin to provide adequate health care to patients with pregnancy risks or complications. Cutler and co-author Jenny Higgins, PhD, MPH, professor and director of the Division of Reproductive and Population Health, spoke with the Cap Times about the study.

In “Abortion bans harm care for pregnancy problems, UW-Madison study says”, Cutler and Higgins talk about the disparities in care for pregnancy complications across different parts of Wisconsin:

““Those of us leading the study, who also practice in Wisconsin, had been seeing on the ground ourselves that pregnant Wisconsinites facing the same unfortunate pregnancy complications could be receiving really different care with potentially really different outcomes, all because they found themselves at different hospitals in our state,” Cutler said.

A patient with pregnancy complications might receive timely and adequate care at one hospital, while down the road another patient with the exact same condition may be given no care at all, said Jenny Higgins, director of the UW’s Collaborative for Reproductive Equity.”
