Professional Development Funding Feature: Gaston attends critical care courses

Each fiscal year, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Development Committee makes available a total of $10,000 for professional development. Faculty may submit applications at any time (until funds are exhausted for the current fiscal year).

Luther Gaston, MD, associate professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, used Faculty Development Funding to expand his critical care skills. What were some of your key takeaways from this activity?

This course is crucial to the management of our high risk obstetrical service at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital and in evaluation of patients in OB triage and on the labor floor.  The course has clinically relevant lectures on post-partum hemorrhage, heart attack in pregnancy, drug overdose in pregnancy, trauma in pregnancy, amniotic fluid embolism and sepsis in pregnancy.

What did you learn that is impacting your work?

I will continue to use information from this course to refine my evaluation and management of patients with OB hemorrhage and trauma in pregnancy.  I am also prepared to handle rarer OB emergencies, such as amniotic fluid embolism or heart attack in pregnancy.

How will your experience benefit the broader Department of Ob-Gyn?

I will be able to teach the residents about critically ill OB patients along with sharing information with other OB providers.
