Luther Gaston, MD, associate professor in the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, attended the SMFM Obstetric Critical Care course: 

What are your key takeaways from the course? 

This series of online lectures includes modules on hypertension and pregnancy, post-partum hemorrhage, neurologic emergencies and other critical care topics. Completing the course increased my confidence and contributes to maternal safety, particularly when working at night and functioning as the high-risk obstetrician on site. 

What did you learn that will impact your work? 

This course expands my knowledge on critical care and high-risk topics, with modules accessible to review at any time and share with trainees and other providers. 

How will your experience and what you learned in your training benefit the broader Department of Ob-Gyn? 

With the increasing number of high-risk pregnancies, including obese patients who are more likely to experience critical care issues during labor and delivery, it’s crucial for those providing care in L&D to become comfortable with critical care. Increasing knowledge about high risk and critical care issues can inform our practice, such as expanding standardized approaches to managing very complex critical care. In the future, I would like to start a fellowship in critical care obstetrics that would include training in cardiology and pregnancy ultrasound.

In Memorium:

Jason Austin – Dr. Ian Bird shared remarks about Jason Austin, longtime member of the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Reproductive Sciences, who passed away in March 2022. Jason was a senior research specialist who made countless contributions to our research mission, was an incredible educator of medical students, residents, fellows, postdocs and more, and his loss is deeply felt.

We also have the great joy of welcoming new arrivals: 

Scott Infusino, MD will join us in July as the Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellow. Infusino received his MD from Quinnipiac University, followed by ob-gyn residency at the University of Maryland.

A couple familiar faces will stay in our department for fellowships:

Matt Wagar, MD is the incoming Gynecologic Oncology fellow. Dr. Wagar attended the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed ob-gyn residency in our department. 

Ushma Patel, MD is the incoming Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery fellow. Dr. Patel attended Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and completed ob-gyn residency in our department.

And of course, we are thrilled to welcome the Ob-Gyn residency intern class!

Gaston published in Journal of Ob-Gyn Hospital Medicine

Luther Gaston, MD, of the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, is senior author on a new article in the most recent issue of the Journal of Ob-Gyn Hospital Medicine!

“Prediction of Vaginal Delivery Using Intrapartum Transperineal Ultrasound”, co-authored by Jackie Adams, MD, of the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine as well as UW Ob-Gyn residency alums Stephanie Peace, MD and Melissa Meyer, MD, describes a pilot study of transperineal ultrasound during labor. The study found:

“Transperineal ultrasound was successful in predicting 90.5% of patients who delivered vaginally. Head-to-Perineal Distance [HPD] predicted 92.3% and Angle Of Progression [AOP] 83.3% of all successful Operative Vaginal Deliveries [OVD]. Among patients who met both ultrasound criteria, there were no failed OVDs. Additional prospective study is needed to refine ultrasound criteria where OVD should not be offered and determine the most predictive combination of measurements for vaginal delivery.”

Three faculty from the UW Department of Ob-Gyn were honored at the UW Health Physician Excellence Awards ceremony on December 7, 2020. The virtual ceremony recognized recipients of 17 excellence awards across the health system. Recipients in our department:

Luther Gaston, MD, of the Division of Academic Specialists in Ob-Gyn, received the UW Health Physician Excellence Rising Star – Clinical Educator Award, which recognizes outstanding educators, with significant emphasis on teaching residents and medical students, as well as other interdisciplinary team members, patients and their families.

Kara Hoppe, DO, of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, received the UW Health Physician Excellence Rising Star Clinical Practice Award, which honors outstanding clinicians who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to safety and quality patient-and-family centered care.

Ryan Spencer, MD, of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, received the UW Health Physician Excellence Rising Star – Leadership Award.
